Our Story...
In 1974, our parents, Herb and Margaret Kaufman, made Napa Valley their home, settling on Old Soda Springs Road at the base of Atlas Peak. The land was untamed but rich with history and promise. With livestock and several barns, the property was operated as a small ranch, complete with horses, cattle, and chickens.
Following the devastation of the 1981 Atlas Fire, Herb—a wine lover, physician, and researcher—saw potential in our land. In 1982, he planted Chardonnay vines, collaborating with UC Davis on an "experiment" that shaped the vineyard’s early years. This was the beginning of the Silverado Summers Vineyard.
The vines grew well and produced exquisite chardonnay for various wineries throughout the Napa Valley. The vineyard became a firebreak around our homestead, a symbol of resilience, renewal, and rebirth.
Our mother, Margaret, brought warmth, wisdom, and creativity to every part of our lives. Her dedication to integrity and family and her care in nurturing our dreams amidst the vines and gardens inspired every step of our journey. Together, our parents taught us that a vineyard is more than rows of grapes and greenery—it is a legacy rooted in hard work, vision, and love.
At the heart of Old Soda Springs is a commitment to timeless wine crafted with authenticity and artistry. We produce 100% estate-grown and bottled Cabernet Sauvignon, honoring Napa Valley’s tradition of family, farming, winemaking, and heritage.
- Our vineyard reflects the lessons of resilience and care instilled by our parents, while our hands-on approach to winemaking ensures that every bottle is a reflection of the land and its history.
- Our wines are designed for moments of savoring—whether now or in the decades to come—and showcase the depth and richness of Napa Valley’s terroir.
- We take pride in our family’s farming legacy, our high-quality fruit, and our meticulous process.
After our father’s passing in 2006, the vineyard fell silent in reverence. In 2016, we replanted it with Cabernet Sauvignon, rotating its orientation to capture the afternoon sun as it dips behind the Silverado Bench. Today, these vines carry forward the legacy of our family and our pursuit of excellence.
Our Cabernet Sauvignon continues our tradition of producing single vineyard, block-designated wines. It is a testament to family, resilience, and the prolific beauty of Napa Valley. We hope you savor this wine as deeply as we’ve cherished creating it.
Cheers!

Our Heart...
Napa is our home. It has been since 1974—perhaps it always was; we just hadn’t arrived yet. Having found where we belong, we cherish the opportunity to continually invest in our community and its heritage.
Some have a passion for winemaking—and that is a beautiful thing—to respect the art and devote yourself to it with love and care. However, winemaking becomes something deeper when your family’s history and that of the land become intertwined. It’s not simply a craft—it’s a part of who we are.
Estate bottled means we get to pour our whole selves and our desire for sublimity into every element of this wine. From the planting of that first cutting for Silverado Springs Vineyard to the last sip that lingers on your palate, we nurture, hone, and perfect our process until our vision becomes something real and shared.
We grew up on this land, and we know it as we know ourselves. We share the fruits of its soil because we want the world to experience the same deep connection we’ve been lucky to experience throughout our lives.
Our Vision...
We have farmed this land for more than 43 years because we know that excellence doesn’t happen by accident—it comes from devotion. We control every step—from soil to bottle—to ensure we produce the absolute best wine we can make.
Quality and tradition may sound simple. Yet, to make quality wine, you must work, refine, test, fail, and try again—over and over—until it is flawless. Tradition? That takes generations of commitment. To pass this responsibility down through the hands of the family, you need more than skill—you need mutual respect, shared awe, and an enduring, encompassing love. At the foot of the Atlas Peak, our family built that foundation—steady, enduring, unbreakable.
With every innovation available, we strive to create impeccable wine—rich in flavor, terroir, and history. We will continue to hold ourselves and our practices to the highest standards, producing wine that our parents and children will take pride in.
Our Winemaker...
Ashley Hepworth, our award-winning winemaker, brings more than 25 years of experience, knowledge, and passion to Old Soda Springs. Her approach to winemaking aligns perfectly with our heart: respect for the land, passion for the craft, and devotion to excellence. A longtime Napa Valley resident, Ashley and Rick met through their shared involvement in the community and bonded over a mutual love of viticulture, oenology, and the land we call home.
Ashley served as Winemaker at Joseph Phelps Vineyards for over 15 years, overseeing the production of the vineyard’s award-winning wines, including its flagship Insignia and Single-Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Backus.
She began her career at Joseph Phelps Vineyards as a Harvest Intern in 1999, progressing to Cellar Lab Technician, Enologist, and eventually Associate Winemaker in 2004. She had the privilege of working with several great winemakers, including the winery’s founder, Joe Phelps.
Ashley honed her palate early in her career working in restaurant kitchens, including the famed Charlie Trotter’s in Chicago. She holds a B.S. in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Fort Lewis College and a Winemaking Certificate from the Viticulture and Enology Department at the University of California, Davis. She also worked the 2005 harvest at Chateau Angelus, a Premier Grand Cru Classé A - Saint-Emilion.
Growing up in Colorado, Ashley became an avid skier, hiker, and mountain biker, having summited many of the state’s 14ers. She also completed two Outward Bound courses, including one in Africa, and summited Mt. Kilimanjaro. Her greatest adventure, however, is raising two children and planning family adventures with her husband, Greg.
Our Tools...
Crafting exceptional wine requires passion sustained by precision. To realize our vision, we refine our methods constantly and invest time and money in the finest tools and techniques to support the artistry and integrity of our process.
As an estate-bottled winery, we’re hands-on from vineyard to bottle. We farm intentionally and sustainably, shoveling weeds by hand, fueling our tractors with low-sulfur diesel, and harvesting each cluster with care. After picking, our optical sorting machine examines each grape and selects only the most pristine fruit for fermentation.
Our wine is made of free-run juice—the most delicate, vibrant expression of the grape. It’s a choice that limits yield but elevates quality. From there, we ferment the wine in new French oak barrels to impart the most refined and subtle flavors to the liquid within.
At Old Soda Springs, fates have collided. We are able to do what we love in a place we call home, and the wine we produce has become the embodiment of love, history, and gratitude.
